Sinking of the ferryboat "Estonia"

Description

September 27, 1994. The Ferryboat "Estonia" was sailing on its usual route - from Tallinn to Stockholm. On board were more than one thousand people. That night there was a storm on the Baltic Sea. A sudden shock hit the boat. From the strong blow the anchor cables in the front of the ship broke. The ship tipped sharply. Those on the open deck were thrown overboard. A crack formed in the bow and water started pouring in. First the trucks and vehicles in the transport compartment became submerged. Then, the water reached the upper deck. The huge vessel, 157 meters long, sank in 15 minutes.
